Cabin Interior

Tenant cabins, such as this one, lacked most amenities and had very simple furnishings. Although it has been removed, newspaper served as wall covering and insulation when the cabin was in use. Oil lamps provided light for residents, and water came from the nearby well. Several people or even a whole family might live in a cabin like this.
Whole families were needed to cultivate cotton. So, children of tenant families worked on the plantation from a young age. They often received little or no education. Churches, such as nearby Morning Grove Church, became an important part of everyday life.
