Civil War Trail Marker
Tennessee was the last Confederate state to secede and the first to rejoin the union. Nonetheless, the Civil War had a lasting effect on Shelby County. For one thing, it brought slavery to an end. It also left lasting physical and emotional scars on the area and its residents. Property was damaged and destroyed in battles and skirmishes that took place nearby.
James Baxter Davies fought for the Confederacy from June 1862 until the end of the war in 1865. His sister-in-law, Frances Anna Vaughn Davies successfully defended her property from a Union soldier with a butcher knife.
