Commissary Interior

Food, such as meat, molasses, and meal, and supplies, such clothing and farming implements, were sold here. Often, purchases were made on credit. “The furnish,” or a set of supplies sold to sharecroppers on credit at the beginning of the season, came from the commissary. “The furnish” could become the foundation of a cycle of debt for sharecroppers. Ledger books were used to keep track of the cotton harvest, purchases, and debt. Several examples of ledger books kept by the Davies family (dating as far back as the 1880s) are on display in the manor house.
