Cooking Vessel

Tenant cabins and even larger homes, such as the manor house, historically lacked kitchens. Cooking within a wooden home posed a fire hazard. Cooking was done outside of the home, either in a separate kitchen or over an open fire. This pot suspended over a fire might seem simple, but it was an effective way to cook meals. For tenant farmers, including sharecroppers, simplicity characterized many aspects of life.
