Mose’s Cabin

Most sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and domestics who worked on Davies Plantation after the Civil War lived in cabins like this one. This cabin belonged to Mose Frazier, who lived and worked on the plantation for about fifty years.

Slave cabins were typically constructed from logs and located in a concentrated area. Most tenant cabins were constructed from wood frames, which could be purchased inexpensively from saw mills. These cabins were generally located near fields worked by particular tenants or families. So, these cabins were spread throughout the plantation.
